Charlemagne is a legend. He was an 8th century Frankish King who fought and won most of Europe before becoming the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He also led the Carolingian Renaissance, a golden age for scholarship and values, during which a new system of writing was established. Music flourished. Libraries and schools were built and became the education infrastructure for much of western and central Europe.1
A renaissance man, Charlemagne was also a supportive father. He himself had only an elementary level of formal education and insisted all 20 of his children be thoroughly educated, regardless of gender, reported History.com.2
